Patent lawyers handle everything that deals with patent issues and obtaining a patent. Patent lawyers attend school just like any other attorney, except they usually attend patent law school. There are some additional requirements that they have to meet by attending patent law school. This is a school that prepares a lawyer to be able to handle patent issues.
The most obvious thing someone interested in becoming a patent lawyer needs to do is to attend patent law school, or attend law school and take patent law school classes. While patent law school classes will give students much valuable information about the area of patent law, it also is advisable to read as much as possible about patent law and keep yourself updated on current patent law cases that are going through the court systems.

The patent law school library is a good place to find information on past and present cases. You should plan on investing a lot of time there. At some point in your college training and education, you will want to get some practical or hands on experience. A good place to do this outside of patent law school would be via an internship with a patent lawyer. An internship outside of patent law school will give you a chance to learn about patent law. With the information and experience you gain from an internship with a patent lawyer, you should be able to make an informed decision on whether or not the area of patent law is truly what you would like to pursue as a career. If you do decide to become a patent lawyer, you will need to decide at some point while attending patent law school if you want to work for a company or individuals. If you work for a company, you will advise them and assist them with the products they manufacture. If you work for individuals, then you will assist them with obtaining patents. There are several steps in obtaining a patent that you will learn about in patent law school. Examples of these areas are: working closely with inventors to learn the details of their inventions, performing a patent search and filing paperwork on behalf of the inventor. The final step in becoming a patent lawyer is to take and successfully pass the patent bar exam. As with any bar exam, it won't be easy for most students. It will take many hours of studying to prepare for the exam sufficiently. Make sure you utilize the patent law school library in order to learn as much as you can about the area of patent law. It stands to reason that the more you familiarize yourself about patent laws and patent law cases, the better you will do on the exam. |
